Skate-o-Rama

Wildlife Connections

Animals can help us think of ways to be "green," and we can help them in return! We'll check out the cool features of the zoo's Conservation Learning Center and learn how animals inspired them. We'll also make some enrichment treats for an animal right at the zoo, and a Keeper will help you give them to the lucky recipient! Includes admission to the zoo for after the program!

This is the first session of the Helping Homeless Hounds series. Girls will be making dog toys to donate to a local shelter and one to take to a pup they know. Girls will learn about different kinds of dogs, what breeds like to play with toys, and which like to lay around. Girls will earn the Dog Breed fun patch.

Girls will see the inner workings of a model cistern, build their own berms and basins, and experiment with rain chains. The Nature Conservancy has examples of passive and active rainwater harvesting-cisterns from 300 gallons to 3,300 gallons. Junior FIRST LEGO® League introduces the youngest students to the exciting worlds of science and technology featuring a real-world challenge to be solved by research, critical thinking and imagination. Leaders and interested parents will get information about starting a Girl Scout team, registration fees, and integrating Jr. FLL Core Values with the Girl Scout Journeys. Girls will have fun exploring the 2010 Challenge theme, learning about the design process, and how engineering helps their communities. Snack included.

NPLD is the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. In 2009, 150,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, removed trash and invasive plants, planted trees and restored our water resources. We will be hosting projects in conjunction with the Catalina Boy Scout Council at Catalina State Park, Kartchner Caverns, Patagonia, Dead Horse Ranch, Buckskin Mountain and Cattail Cove. Projects will include things like trail work, painting, river clean-up and invasive species removal.

SMART-Making a Difference Through Science and Technology

Come experience the thrill of free flying birds of prey at the Raptor Free Flight. Raptor Free Flight is a dynamic bird of prey flight demonstration that occurs in the open desert showcasing natural behaviors of native birds. Unlike other bird flight shows, the Raptor Free Flight focuses the attention on the birds and how they behave in nature. Self transport and pay Desert Museum admission. E-Council Registration is NOT necessary. Seating at the program is first come first seated, this is a general admission show.

Our partnership with the Returned Peace Corps Fellows continues as they join us again for this special Thinking Day celebration! Troops presenting will be contacted by our coordinator after registering to determine countries they've represented before and what their preference is for this year. Every effort will be made to accommodate your preference, but selection is dependent on our available Peace Corps representatives. A work session will be planned prior to the holidays (date TBA).

If you want to try on the role of an engineer or scientist, then these super Sundays are for you. Each session will focus on a different field but all will include hands-on activities facilitated by engineers or scientists from our community, a fun patch, fulfilled badge requirements, and snacks. Please bring your own lunch if your day spans noon. Keep your eyes on our website for details. Themes TBA and will vary each month.
