Health and Safety
Every precaution is taken to see that your child has a
healthy and safe summer program experience. Sahuaro Girl
Scout Council, Inc. complies with the safety standards of
the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. as defined in Safety-Wise and
other publications detailing strict site management
guidelines.
At Whispering Pines a qualified health supervisor is
available on site during Resident Camp and a doctor is on
call. All staff at Hacienda and Whispering Pines are
certified in first aid and CPR. Resident Camp campers are
required to provide a health history and to have a health
examination by a licensed physician within the 24-month
period preceding their camp session. Information and health
history forms are provided in the confirmation packet. All
medication brought to Resident Camp must be turned over to
the health supervisor who will administer it according to
the directions. During troop camps leaders are responsible
for the administration of girls’ medications. Children and
adults who participate in Family, Troop, and Day Camps are
required only to submit a health history. On camp arrival
day, the camp medical personnel have the right to refuse to
admit a girl to camp who does not meet the acceptable health
conditions. Examples: temperature, contagious disease, lice,
etc.

Optional transportation to and from Resident Camp is
available for an additional charge. The cost is $26 round
trip or $13 one way. Buses leave from and return to the Girl
Scout Resource Center at 4300 East Broadway Blvd. in Tucson.
If you would like your daughter to ride the bus to or from
camp please indicate so on the registration form. If your
transportation needs should change please notify the council
at least three weeks prior to the beginning of the camp
session. Information on bus time schedules is provided in
the confirmation packet. A minimum number of riders will be
required to ensure bus service. Participants Family and
Troop Camps must provide their own transportation to and
from camp. Teddy Bear Picnic Resident Camp participants must
provide transportation one way. We encourage participants to
carpool with other campers.

campers depart for Resident Camp. Each adult will assist
with camper check-in and deliver them to camp staff upon
arrival at camp. If you are interested in chaperoning please
indicate so on the registration form. Chaperones’ daughters
will ride without charge. Space for chaperones is limited.

We are offering an air-conditioned shuttle for girls living
on Tucson’s Northwest side (cost $25 per week). Drop off
your child at 7:45 a.m. at a designated location near the
Tucson Mall, then pick her up at 5:00 p.m. that evening at
the same location. Specific drop off/pick up location will
be provided in the confirmation packet. A minimum number of
riders will be required.
Staff
Sahuaro Girl Scout Council employs responsible, energetic,
knowledgeable, caring and committed staff. Staff members are
young adults, many of whom are attending college or are
college graduates. All camp staff are screened via
confidential references. Both new and returning staff are
involved in an intensive training program before campers
arrive.
Food
Whispering Pines serves ample, well balanced meals approved
by a dietitian. The camp cooks provide healthy meals with
multiple options suited to youthful tastes. Most meals are
served family-style in the camp dining hall. A salad bar is
often available. Occasionally the girls cook in their unit.
Campers at the Hacienda bring sack lunches from home four
days each week. One day during each session, girls prepare
and cook lunch or a special meal is brought in for the
campers. Beverages are provided each day. At either
facility, we are happy to accommodate our campers’ special
dietary needs; note such needs on the health history form
provided to you with confirmation materials. |
